Repair and spare parts

If your wheel that is fitted with a Bosch eBike system develops a defect related to our eBike drive, we recommend consulting a  bicycle retailer specializing in eBikes. The retailer will have all the right special tools, such as a software diagnosis tool, to identify the exact problem. Even ambitious bicycle repair enthusiasts may not be able to repair the fault and there is a significant risk that improper repairs will compromise the safety of the overall system.

Can Bosch eBike drive units be repaired?

Maintenance work and minor repairs to the drive unit can be carried out by specialist dealers. This includes, for example, the use of a drive unit repair kit, regreasing or the replacement or retrofitting of bearing protection rings. If a larger defect is established, the motor will be collected from the dealer by Bosch. Whether a repair is possible is decided individually in each case. With some fault patterns, the drive units undergo a remanufacturing process in a service case. This means that drives that qualify for this after appropriate testing are reconditioned. After a final inspection, they are made available to the customer again with full functionality. This is part of our sustainability strategy and contributes to the reuse of components that are not defective.

Can Bosch eBike batteries be repaired?

For safety reasons, defective, old or "exhausted" batteries cannot be repaired or refreshed. Lithium-ion batteries are complex, finely tuned systems with a high energy content. In the event of a repair, correct functioning and optimum interaction with the battery management system can no longer be guaranteed. In addition, the tightness of the housing cannot be ensured when the battery is reassembled.

For safety reasons, rechargeable batteries must pass extensive series tests in accordance with national and international legislation and normative requirements before they can be placed on the market. These series tests are not feasible for a single repaired battery due to the prescribed number of test samples. This includes, for example, housing tightness testing, as well as overcharging and short-circuit tests. If these tests are not carried out, there is a high risk of moisture penetrating the battery, for example. In the worst case, this can cause a short circuit and thus create a hazard. All this can have safety-relevant consequences. Therefore, for safety reasons Bosch strongly advises against having the battery repaired.

Bosch eBike batteries must not be opened under any circumstances – including during repair by a third party. Opening the battery means interfering with its as-delivered condition approved by Bosch, and entails safety-related risks. There is a risk that, once opened, the Bosch eBike battery may catch fire due to a short circuit, for example because of squashed or incorrectly routed cables, detached components, or poor quality electrical connections. Once an eBike battery has been opened, these dangers persist if it continues to be used.

Spare parts

In general, Bosch eBike Systems aims for spare parts availability of at least 6 years after the products were last delivered to the eBike manufacturer. In individual cases, however, we may not be able to meet this target if, for example, our suppliers can no longer provide individual components. If necessary, we suggest alternative components, e.g., upgrades.
