Don't get confused: everyone talks about eBikes, but there are actually three types of electric bicycles. The generic term "eBike" has become established, but conceals the differences between the various types of bikes. These lie in the motor power, the type of support and the legal requirements. To keep it simple, we always use the term "eBike" as a synonym for a pedelec.
Strictly speaking, most eBikes are Pedelecs ("Pedal Electric Cycle") - i.e. a bicycle with an electric auxiliary motor. It supports you with a maximum permissible continuous rated power of 250 watts when you pedal. Up to a maximum speed of 25 km/h. If you want to go even faster, you have to achieve this with pure muscle power. This means that pedelecs are legally considered bicycles. You don't need a driver's license or insurance to ride them.
With S-pedelecs, the S stands for "speed. They function in exactly the same way as pedelecs, but their powerful electric motor accelerates you up to a speed of 45 km/h. That's why they are considered light motorcycles. For their riders, this means a class AM driver's license and, in addition to compulsory insurance, helmets are compulsory. And beware, the use of bike paths is not permitted in many places - find out in advance what the regulations are in your country.
Drive unit, display and battery are the components that make an eBike an eBike. These are supplemented by digital services and apps. All of these components are most effective when thought of as a unit and designed as a system: In this way, they work together in harmony. What is the range of a single battery charge? This is a common question for many eBikers. There is no definitive answer. The number and variety of influential factors is simply too great. Sometimes a single battery charge will take you less than 50 kilometres, while at other times it will take you much further than 100 kilometres.
Range is influenced by the rider and the chosen support mode, as well as the drive unit or battery installed in the eBike. Environmental factors such as temperature, wind conditions and riding surface also play a key role in how far you can get on a battery charge. A hub refers to the display mount attached to the handlebars of the eBike. For us, this term is usually associated with the smartphone, because you can also simply use your smartphone as an on-board computer.
