El bloguero de viajes y presentador de radio y televisión belga (Q-Music, Q2 y VTM) Sam De Bruyn fue invitado por Bosch eBike Systems a un fin de semana de exploración en la popular ciudad de Ámsterdam para su blog de viajes Handbagage. Junto a Arnout, uno de sus mejores amigos, recorrió la capital holandesa en una bicicleta eléctrica, con consejos para los lugares más interesantes dados por el periodista de estilo de vida holandés Niobe Moen de Margriet.nl.
Todo el mundo conoce Ámsterdam. Los canales y las casas adorables. Como en la foto de abajo. Los «coffee shops» y el animado barrio rojo. Las hordas de turistas. Las manadas de despedidas de soltero y soltera. Los autobuses repletos de niños en su viaje escolar anual. La montaña de gente que abarrota el ya saturado centro de la ciudad. La pesadilla del misántropo. Esta vez hemos descubierto una cara de Ámsterdam totalmente distinta.
¡Y me he enamorado para siempre!
Estábamos en Amsterdam en una misión. Una especie de intercambio de viajes culturales, se podría decir. Una periodista holandesa especializada en estilo de vida me pidió que organizara un fin de semana en bicicleta en mi ciudad, Gante, en Bélgica. A cambio, me hizo un itinerario por su propia ciudad, Ámsterdam. No un itinerario turístico cualquiera, sino un paseo en bicicleta por algunas de las calles más sugerentes de la ciudad.
Me llevé conmigo a mi amigo Arnout, el padre de mi hermosa ahijada, Elle. Somos hermanos de bicicleta. Llevamos años hablando de crear nuestro propio blog de ciclismo. Si tuviéramos más tiempo... Para este viaje, utilizamos un equipo de ciclismo especial. Desplázate hacia abajo para saber más. Nuestro lugar seguro en Ámsterdam fue un pequeño y acogedor Airbnb, con un jardín delantero. El interior estaba impecable.
Our map showed us miles full of potential charm & beauty. A perfect tour to try something we had never used before: E-bikes! The worlds fastest growing bicycle type and a nice environment-friendly alternative to move around in any city.
Our bikes were powered by the new Bosch Active Line & Active Line Plus engine. Don't get confused now. You still have to pedal with these beasts. The engine only assists you with that task, and gets you swiftly from nothing to 25km/h.
The best thing about these new Bosch systems is the modest size of the engine, which makes the bikes a lot lighter than their older siblings. It also made it possible for the bike developers to actually think about the design of their two-wheelers. The newest models even have the battery incorporated inside the frame. Don't you think they look awesome?
Our wheels came with a battery that gave us enough power to keep on biking for the full 48 hours of our trip. We never had to charge them. It also had "Nyon" on board, an all-in-one bike computer, with bike navigation & custom maps. Pretty easy to download them at home from your computer, or even on the road with your smartphone, using bluetooth. A lifesaver on a trip like this!
To get to Amsterdam North, you have to cross the water. Amazing, isn't it, how the best parts of the biggest cities are always at the far end of the water. I wrote this so many times before on this blog. It's a fact.
It's easy to get to that side of the river IJ. There's a ferry boat, free of charge. You just hop on it, with your bike.
Honestly, we had no idea where to find the hotspots of Amsterdam North. I had to use my social skills to get some intel. Apparently, one of the places we had to try, was right around the corner where we were checking our smartphones. Hotel de Goudfazant. Contrary to what the name suggests, it is not a hotel. Nor a car workshop, although that's exactly what it looks like and probably was, at some point in the past. It's a superbe restaurant, in an amazing-looking hangar. Rough on the outside, but refined stuff on the plates, we were promised. We lunged into the open garage door and made a reservation for the evening.
Culturally there's a lot going on in Amsterdam North. And if you're into ... stuff (calling it junk would be pretty inappropriate) ... Don't go anywhere else!
¿Monstruosos almacenes llenos de basura o más bien de tesoros? Supongo que depende de quién mira. Se trata de una enorme colección de artículos reciclados. Desde lámparas industriales hasta mangos de cocina vintage, muebles o arte, tienen un poco de todo.
Si te mudas a una casa nueva y necesitas algo para darle a tu interior ese toque especial, no dejes de visitar Neef Louis. Ah, y recuerda no comprar muebles grandes si llegas en bicicleta eléctrica.
Pllek, Noorderlicht, Sexyland, REM... Es todo cuestión de onda, en el fondo. No hay mucho que explicar.
Cruising with our e-bikes was so much fun, we didn't even give a f*ck about the rain.
Well maybe just a tiny little bit.
No voy a mentir. Estábamos calados hasta los huesos tras un par de fuertes chaparrones. Volvimos a casa para cambiarnos y prepararnos para una noche repleta de delicias locales. Mediamatic es un espacio inspirador en un invernadero junto al río. Es un centro de investigación, arte y diseño, con comida, bebidas e incluso una microcervecería.
Después del primer día en bicicleta eléctrica por Ámsterdam, llegó el momento de sentarse en el Hotel De Goudfazant y concluir que había sido una jornada notablemente sorprendente. El viaje habitual a Ámsterdam, con los turistas, el ruido y el resto de molestias, dejo paso a algo completamente diferente. Al norte encontramos paz, inspiración, estilo y diversión. Una Ámsterdam completamente nueva. Fácilmente accesible en bicicleta. Tras una comida excelente, estábamos listos para lo que hubiera de venir.
After spinning the needle of our imaginary compass, we agreed to ride around the center of Amsterdam, not straight up north. After all, it's not that hard to go the extra mile with an e-bike.

The moment you even succeed in making a plant shop look like a wondrous place to hang out, that's when you're winning in life. In love with Wildernis!
For our plant-based lunch, we went to Roots. A great example of how vegan food can be everything except boring. I would worship a place like this in my hometown. Our body filled with energy & our heart full of love.
Love for our bikes, because they showed us how to embrace all different sides of Amsterdam. Can't wait for another 48hrs!
El héroe musical belga Jacques Brel dedicó una canción a esta parte de Ámsterdam, allá por los años 60. Aunque nunca la grabó en estudio, es uno de sus temas más populares. Existen versiones de Edith Piaf, David Bowie, John Denver y muchos más. Existen también un par de grabaciones en directo de la canción que ya son eternas.
