An eBike is much more than a bicycle. The power of its electric motor helps you get around better. In the city, across the country or up a mountain. It gives you a power boost when you need it and makes you independent of schedules or parking spaces. The eBike takes up little space and produces neither noise nor exhaust fumes. No wonder the eBike is booming. Its advantages fascinate and convince. And yet there are questions. About the technology, about operation, about use in road traffic. But don't worry: We'll explain everything you need to know here.
eBike variants explained - overview for getting started
Don't get confused: Everyone talks about eBikes, but there are actually three types of electric bikes. The generic term "eBike" has become established, but conceals the differences between the variants. They lie in the motor power, the type of support and the legal requirements. To keep it simple, we also speak of the "eBike" - always as a synonym for a pedelec.
Strictly speaking, most eBikes are Pedelecs ("Pedal Electric Cycle") - i.e. a bicycle with an electric auxiliary motor. It supports you with a maximum permissible continuous rated power of 250 watts when you pedal. Up to a maximum speed of 32 km/h. If you want to go even faster, you have to achieve this with pure muscle power. This means that pedelecs are legally considered bicycles. You don't need a driver's license or insurance to ride them.
With S-pedelecs, the S stands for "speed. They function in exactly the same way as pedelecs, but their powerful electric motor accelerates you up to a speed of 45 km/h. That's why they are considered light motorcycles. For their riders, this means a class AM driver's license and, in addition to compulsory insurance, helmets are compulsory. And beware, the use of bike paths is not permitted in many places - find out in advance what the regulations are in your country.
The mid-engine. The golden mean.
In 90% of pedelecs, a mid-motor provides propulsion. There's a good reason for this: It sits at the bottom bracket in the middle of the bike, which lowers the center of gravity and leads to balanced weight distribution. Both of these factors make handling easier, and the direct power transmission to the chain also conveys a natural riding feel. And because the Bosch eBike motors, also called drive units, measure important riding data over 1,000 times per second with their sensors, they always provide you with the optimum performance. Sensitively dosed and tailor-made for you.
The fact that most eBikes use a mid-motor instead of a front or rear wheel motor brings another advantage. It preserves the natural riding feel familiar from bicycles and you don't feel pushed (rear wheel motor) or pulled (front wheel motor). In addition, with the mid-motor, the power can be controlled sensitively and precisely via the pedal pressure. Very important: Only the mid-motor can provide maximum power even at low speeds. It gives you thrust whenever you need it.
The batteries - energy providers for eBike riding fun
The eBike motor draws the energy to power you everywhere from the eBike battery. It supplies the eBike motor with power and decisively influences the range. Therefore, there are eBike batteries for different requirements as well as for different installation and mounting variants. Whichever eBike you choose, whatever your requirements - Bosch has the right lithium-ion battery.
The PowerTube batteries can be seamlessly integrated into the bike frame, while the PowerPacks can be mounted either on the frame or on the rear rack. So that you always have enough energy for your flow and a long riding pleasure, all batteries are available with different capacities, which are measured in Wh (watt-hour). Likewise, there are different chargers to quickly recharge the batteries after the driving fun.
Display, app, control unit: Smart connected
The display is the control centre on the handlebar. It allows you to display various information such as range or selected riding mode and gives you the opportunity to change the riding modes / support levels. Displays are available in many variants and with different functions. From the small control unit with minimalist display of riding modes and range, such as Purion or the LED remote, to classic displays with screen, to fully networked board computers including smart features and automatic updates over-the-air, everything is now possible. Power needs control. The support levels.
The eBike expands your muscle power with motor power. You decide how much extra power it provides. Simply by using your own power and selecting the assistance level. Whether you want to work up a full sweat, arrive at the office without sweat stains or make a good run - your eBike will help you. A push of a button is all it takes. Only your riding fun always remains at maximum.

The smart system offers a choice of different riding modes, these adapt the support from the eBike motor according to application and rider type.
* In eMTB mode, the level of support varies between Tour and Turbo riding modes.
** In Tour+ mode, the level of support varies between Eco and Turbo riding modes.
All the available riding modes can be flexibly combined on eBikes with the smart system. Exceptions in this case are Cargo mode and Race mode, which are only available for eBikes with the Cargo Line or the Performance Line CX Race Limited Edition. Specialist dealers can activate up to four modes (in addition to Off mode) and thus adapt them perfectly them to your needs (unless modifications have been excluded by the bicycle manufacturer). With the help of the individual riding modes, you can configure the Race, Cargo, Turbo, Auto, eMTB, Sport, Tour+, Tour and Eco modes via the eBike Flow app according to your individual needs. The support, dynamics, maximum torque and maximum speed can be set within the specified limits.
