Transporting eBikes safely and properly

There is a distinction to be made between commercial and private use when transporting eBikes and eBike rechargeable batteries. For private users, we recommend that the rechargeable battery always be removed when transporting eBikes, and that it be safely and securely stowed, so that it does not move in the vehicle and cannot be damaged.

The commercial transport of eBikes and eBike rechargeable batteries is subject to hazardous material regulations, whose legislative framework is provided by the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR).

By car:

Before mounting eBikes on roof racks for transport, private users should remove the on-board computer and the eBike rechargeable battery to prevent damage.

When transporting eBikes by car, private users should observe a few basic principles. With their rechargeable batteries, conventional pedelecs weight between 20 and 28 kg (44 - 62 lbs). Additionally, their frames are often larger than those of conventional bicycles without electrical support. This results in important limiting factors concerning the use of carrier systems, such as the permissible total weight of bike carriers, as well as the adequate dimensionality of their brackets and stand rails. Most carrier system manufacturers now offer special carriers for eBikes. These are suitable for heavier loads and can usually be folded down with the bicycles still mounted, in order to gain access to the trunk. Mounting ramps, which are ideal for eBikes, are also available as bike carrier accessories.

Freight forwarding & parcel services

In the case of transport by commercial users or a third party (such as air transport or freight forwarding), special requirements of the ADR in regard to packaging and labeling must be observed.

Rechargeable batteries may be shipped by private users only if they are undamaged. Exposed contacts should be taped over and the rechargeable battery packaged, so that it cannot move inside the packaging.

Further questions regarding the transport of batteries can be answered by qualified dealers. They can also supply you with suitable transport packaging.

By train

Generally, pedelecs may be transported by train.

Keep in mind, however, that you may need to contend with stairs in some train stations.

By air

Most airlines exclude the transport of eBikes and their rechargeable batteries.

You can, however, send your eBike in advance by cargo ship.

Do’s & Don’ts: How do I clean my eBike properly?

“A clean eBike is a happy eBike...” – The eBiking season is already in full swing. That means that more than a few rides through rain, dirt and dust. So, what do I do if my eBike doesn't look that fresh anymore? It's best not to put off cleaning it very long. And never use a pressure washer! Here are some do's and don'ts about cleaning eBikes.

It's best to clean your eBike right after riding it. This way, any dirt will still be moist and easy to remove.

Before cleaning (as well as before doing any work on your eBike), always remove the battery. Clean the plug pole mounted on the frame.

When cleaning your eBike, it's best to use water, a sponge and soft brush. An extra tip: You'll reach all the nooks and crannies of your eBike's frame with a small sponge or one cut in half.

Cleaning the wheels: It's best to always clean the wheels from the hub outwards to the rims, and then rinse thoroughly with water.

After cleaning your eBike, don't forget to re-oil the chain. To do so, thinly apply some chain oil. Afterward, shift through all the gears once, and then remove any excess oil with a clean rag.

Before re-inserting the battering, be sure to dry off its contacts (or let them dry on their own).

And last but not least, check your eBike's bolts, brakes and lights, and the tension of the spokes. And of course, check the pressure of both tires.

When cleaning your eBike, never use a steam pressure washer. Doing so could damage the inner electronics. It could also remove lubricant from the chain and bearings, which can lead to corrosion.

Never clean your eBike too roughly. eBikes have sensitive electronic parts, so it's better to clean them gently and carefully.

Never completely immerse the battery in water. Wiping it off with a damp cloth is sufficient.

The battery should not be re-inserted while its contacts are still moist.

Never apply degreasing cleansers to the tires or seals, as this will damage the rubber.
