It is so green ...
The Viennese company Stadtbeet transforms urban courtyards, balconies and terraces into green oases of well-being – and relies on eCargo bikes for its transport.
When spring arrives and the first tender greenery pushes the grey-brown drabness to the side, life immediately seems a little more worth living. People living in the countryside are often amazed at the impressive colourfulness with which nature takes the reins again. But don't worry, because if you live in Vienna, Fritz Schwärz and Zeno Valenti from Stadtbeet will also bring the greenery to your urban living space by eCargo bike. With their ecologically sustainable planting systems, they prove that you don't necessarily need your own garden or patio to enjoy this natural luxury in the city.
Since the two entrepreneurs are passionate cyclists and sustainability and resource conservation are close to their hearts, it was clear from the beginning that the vehicle fleet also had to meet their personal requirements: While Fritz and Zeno initially relied on pure muscle power for the cargo bike, they soon reached their limits due to the heavy load and the eCargo bike made its entrance in Neumayergasse where their business is located. "Even in Vienna, there are always uphill and downhill stretches, so when you're fully loaded, you're grateful that you can just switch up a support level," says Fritz. The choice fell on a mono-lane model: "This way, you can still easily get past parked cars on a multi-purpose lane. It just makes you much faster in traffic."
On the Packster 80 from Riese&Müller, equipped with the Performance Line CX, up to 200 kilograms can now be loaded and thanks to the specially made trailer there is even more space for plants, soil and tool with a sophisticated loading system. Even the weekly shopping trip from Neumayrgasse to the plant market on the Alte Donau is done with the eCargo bike – they manage it in just under 40 minutes. Traffic jams and uphill stretches now only make them grin!
Whether it's a birch tree on the roof terrace, your own strawberry plantation or a touch of Provence with fragrant lavender on the balcony - there are almost no limits to creativity. And because the challenges at these locations are very different due to the space, wind and sun conditions, it's often the right mix that makes the difference: "With the specially developed system of planter, water storage system, special soil and selected plant combinations, our customers can enjoy the benefits of their oasis of well-being to the full, even if they don't have green fingers." Plants improve air quality, especially in the city, provide cooling in summer and can be used as natural noise and privacy screens. The new trend towards façade greening is already taking hold in the big city and the two city gardeners are also very happy to be part of it.
They are planted in bags made of polypropylene fibres or recycled advertising tarps. Those who prefer something more traditional or elegant can opt for vessels made of oak wood or Corten steel (weatherproof structural steel). The ecologically sustainable complete systems were specially conceived for urban use for balcony and terrace greening. By the way, those who prefer to garden themselves can also order the urban garden beds online. They are easy to assemble and, thanks to precise operating instructions, also easy to handle and very flexible.
